LASER TREATMENT OF SPIDER VEINS
Spider Veins
As we age, many of us find the red, bluish or purple lines or swollen strings spreading across our thighs and calves. These abnormal, distorted and twisted blood vessels, known as spider veins (telangiectasia) occur in around 60% of adults.
Who Can Get Spider Veins?
Anyone can get spider veins or varicose veins, but women are twice as susceptible as men. The problem is also more common in people with jobs that keep them on their feet, including doctors, nurses, cooks, teachers and factory workers.
Other factors that may contribute include ageing, obesity, pregnancy, prior trauma or surgery to the leg(s) and a genetic predisposition.

What Causes Spider Veins
Healthy veins transport blood to the heart through one-way valves to prevent backflow. These valves allow blood to flow in the right direction from superficial veins to deeper veins and the heart. The vessels are surrounded by muscles that contract and help pump blood to the heart.
However, problems with the valves, muscles or blood itself can allow blood to pool inside the vein, thus increasing pressure and weakening the vessel wall. The valves become incompetent due to the vascular wall dilatation and venous return (reflux). As a result, the dilated veins bulge and twist; the small veins and capillaries turn into spider veins, and the more prominent subcutaneous veins turn into varicose veins.

A Combination Of Spider & Varicose Veins
Quite often, people may have a combination of both spider veins and varicose veins.
Spider veins and varicose veins are more than just an eyesore. Varicose veins, in particular, may cause aching or cramping in the legs. The affected areas may throb, burn, tingle, or feel heavy. Severely inflamed veins can be tender to the touch and may reduce circulation, leading to itchy, swollen ankles and lower thirds of the tibias.
Advanced cases of varicose veins may also produce chronic skin and soft tissue changes, such as discolouration (darkening) and ulceration (venous ulcers).
